“I found the weirdest thing in my WholeFoods…Bolthouse Farms”

Downtown Silver Spring Whole Foods

I have been shopping at WholeFoods for about a year now. My girlfriend put me on to buying stuff from there. While perusing through, I discovered they have some great organic lotions and soaps and I really like their Fair Trade and non-GMO products. The earthy atmosphere they provide is also very inviting. Yeah, I’m somewhat of a hippie. Anyway, I recently went on one of my routine shopping trips to my local WholeFoods and encountered something I had never seen before. An entire wall of BoltHouse Farms beverages in a variety of flavors and sizes. As my eyes glanced from left to right at the super colorful outer packaging of the BoltHouse Farms bottles, I noticed an array of delicious looking smoothies. There was “Strawberry Banana,” “Berry Boost,” “C-Boost,” “Blue Goodness,” and “Green Goodness.”  The images of peaches, berries, kiwi, apples and many other delicious fruit sent my taste buds into a frenzy. My curiosity to find out what one of them would taste like combined with a sudden urge to drink healthy brought my eyes to the “Green Goodness” fruit smoothie. Looking at the outside of the bottle I thought to myself, “It has kiwi and apples. It has to taste good.” So I spent the four dollars and some change and bought the thirty-two ounce bottle of “Green Goodness” and went home.

Green Goodness

This is where it gets weird. When I got home I immediately shook the bottle up as its packaging instructed, twisted the green cap and took a sip. Suddenly, my taste buds were being taken through a roller coaster of flavors. I was tasting kiwi, apple, and oddly enough…grass. Yeah, that’s right. I tasted grass. And not like your ordinary run-of-the-mill grass. This was fresh cut yard grass. But it gets even stranger because I found that after the initial palette shock of drinking some kind of rabbit-brew, I actually liked the stuff. No, Not liked it. I loved it. I couldn’t put the bottle down. My mind started racing as it attempted to decipher the many other fruits and vegetables my tongue tasted after every sip. After minutes of getting nowhere, I decided to actually read the bottle for the ingredients and what I discovered blew my mind.

Inside every bottle of Green Goodness there are: 3 Apples, 1/2 Pineapple, 1 Mango, 1 Banana, 1 Kiwi, Broccoli, Spinach, Green Tea, Barley Grass, Wheat Grass, Blue Green Algae, Echinacea, Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke, Nova Scotia Dulce, Spirulina, Chlorella, Lemon Bioflavanoids, and tons of vitamins, good acids and other healthy stuff your body loves. So basically this stuff is some kind of miracle drink. Not only is it tasty, but it is very healthy, and at 560 calories a bottle you get a little over a quarter of your daily calorie intake (based on a 2,000 calorie diet). And since it is thirty-two ounces or the equivalent of about four glasses (eight ounces per glass), you can actually pour yourself a glass of it during lunch and save the rest for dinner. This is especially beneficial to people on the juicing or liquid diet. While this drink boasts a price tag of about four dollars plus tax per bottle, I think it is well worth it considering its great taste and great health benefits. Plus, as an added bonus it is Gluten Free, Preservative Free, GMI free, and has no artificial colors or flavors. So yes ladies and gentleman, that incredible hulk looking drink really is incredible. I am glad I stumbled across this weird stuff in WholeFoods. Now I am going to try their other flavors. I hear their Vanilla Chai Tea is amazing!

  1. Hi I got the “dark chocolate keto protein” bottle grom bolt house farms its taste so good but this is the 2nd time drinking it and I have an awful stomach ache its bearable but not something I should feel after I drink something “healthy” and It happening more than once. • I drank the blended coffee protein drink today for the first time ever. Within minutes my body started having a reaction although I didn’t put two and two together. I started feeling warm all over. After an hour and finishing the drink I started getting an itchy place on my neck..I thought it was my new fluffy vest from Kohl’s I was reacting too. In a matter of 30 minutes i went from a small itchy patch to a rash all over my neck, face, chest, ears…got home and undressed and MY ENTIRE BODY was beet red, in hives, giving off heat…and my hands were swelling. I ended up in immediate care getting a steroid shot within 5 minutes of getting there. The Dr was considering sending me to the ER because I coming close to becoming anaphylactic. This drink was the only difference today in my morning routine. I truly advise anyone to just skip this brand. It was overwhelmingly scary how fast and aggressively my allergic reaction happened..

  2. I get the 15.2 fl. oz. bottles of Bolthouse Farms Vanilla Chai, Mocha Cappuccino and Salted Caramel Latte. I never have stomach aches, diarrhea or vomiting from those or the fruit/veggie flavored ones and I have IBS which causes me enough trouble. Of course I don’t drink one in minutes, that’s asking for diarrhea…just like with eating too much fruit. And sometimes it’s not best on an empty stomach, it’s better with meals and it’s never good to down a 32 oz.in one go, I usually make mine last 4 times, once a day with breakfast. What’s even better about the three I listed for me is the chai makes me feel awake and energized and although I can’t drink normal coffee, the small amount of Arabica coffee in the cappuccino and latte don’t cause me to throw up like coffee usually does.

Hi all, laying here dying in bed after drinking ACAI plus 10 Bolthouse Farms. Came home after spending a great day with the hubby. We ate all the same foods throughout the day BUT the BOLTHOUSE drink. Within 30-40 minutes it hit. WOW!
The only time I ever felt this bad was food poisoning from a restaurant and after drinking a vitamin water drink. I may have to stop writing and run to bathroom again….. oh the pain! ugg.
It IS suppose to be loaded with fruit and it does have magnesium in it that can make one run to the bathroom. But….
Now I do juice currently and have been on the raw diet for one year in the past and have never felt like this. Somethings is wrong.

  4. Yikes. I drank half of the strawberry banana yesterday afternoon and stomach problems at night. Thought it was something else I ate. Then I drank the rest this AM and had the same problem a couple of hours later.

I am no longer going to touch this brand. Very painful.

My mouth kept getting watery I decided to drink water while talking to myself to calm myself down I felt horribly nauseous and threw it all up secs later. I had to lay down but my stomach still wasn’t right 10 mins later I was running back and forth from my bed to the bathroom constantly for 4 hours. I will NEVER buy this again

  8. The company that owns bottlehouse juices paid millions of dollars to hide an ingredient from the list… It tells me it must be something bad. They also paid for the bottle to say GMO free or whatever. Can’t believe people fall for this crap and actually think a multi million dollar company would really sell us something that might be good for us.. no sorry but this isn’t “healthy” you are better off making your own juices with a juicer and organic fruit.

  9. I drank a Boathouse Chocolate Protein drink this morning and about 2 hours later became violently ill which lasted for a few hours. I drank it on an empty stomach around 11:00 am. I’m really concerned about what they put in that drink. I never have any gastro issues whatsoever or allergies to any food. The only other time I’ve had that reaction to food is when I’ve eaten a Wendy’s hamburger but not as violent as this experience.

  10. 2 years ago I made a green smoothie with bolthouse farms green goddess and gave it to my 2 year old…40 min late he threw up for 4-5 hours straight and was white as a ghost. The doctor said it was the stomach bug..a week exactly I made the same smoothie with the same ingredients and it happened again. I called his allergist and brought the drink in..they pricked his back and there was no swelling. They convinced me that it was back to back stomach bugs which I know it is this green goodess that did it to him. I will never buy another product for that company again.

Oh thank you Great Bolthouse Farms Vanilla Chai. Bolthouse poison needs to be taken off all shelves immediately, especially Whole Foods where I purchased my vile.

I put the cap back on to shake it… it’s blowing inside itself like a balloon then i opened the cap quickly to stop it. right there, I knew something was wrong and it smelled funny. 13. Not quite sure what to make of my Bolthouse drink experience. I picked one of the 15.2 fl. oz. drinks up from Target by chance. I’m always looking for protein drinks as I don’t eat much meat. It said lactose free on the side so I was sold. I’m lactose intolerant and almost every protein drink is milk based. Anyway it is specifically the Vanilla Chai Tea flavor. After drinking about half I started feeling a little sick. I went up and unloaded the dishwasher, progressively feeling worse and becoming sluggish. I thought it might be the drink, but almost couldn’t believe something would happen that quick (I drank half in a couple gulps, one sitting maybe 5 minutes total). So I polished it off. A little while later I felt even worse and ended up being very sick. I was in the bathroom for almost an hour. I took a probiotic to try and help me. I could barely walk, because standing caused my stomach pain. Not cramps just straight up pain. Then I was in the bathroom again about an hour later. Stomach still hurt and I felt just straight up sick. Like a little nauseous and just crappy.

Now I am used to feeling sick. My lactose intolerance is pretty extreme and went undiagnosed for a long time, maybe a year (I was 12 when it really developed). I know how my body reacts to things it doesn’t like. Food poisoning (minus the vomiting) actually feels the same as a lactose episode. This on the other hand is bizarre. I just feel sick almost like I caught a stomach bug or something, but it only started right after the drink and that was the only dietary change I made today. The odds of a coincidence seem too extreme. Chai is supposed to help dietary issues!! Ugh! I was really hoping I had found my drink, but I guess not.

Also, after reading some of these comments about the company and other people allergic reactions I’m kinda glad I got sick. It lead me to this blog which informed me of their not so ethical treatment to their customers. Also for the calories it’s not that filling.

    • The same thing happened to me today. Then it brought back the strangest memories. I used to drink these smoothies years ago. I loved the berry boost. About 5 years ago I tried the green goodness one day and I was instantly sick with many of the same symptoms you had. I had no idea what happened, but I did stop drinking them after that as I thought it rather odd.

This week I decided to try them again, the green goodness looking appetizing. Within 1hr I was unbelievably sick. I could not stop vomiting, massive stomach cramps, etc…. Then I remembered the last time this happened to me after drinking the green goodness. It reminded me of food poisoning that I had once. This was an aweful experience. I never had a problem with the other flavors, but this one caused me to be violently ill. I could not even keep water down without vomiting and I did not eat anything else, it seems to coincidental to me. I believe this was directly related to the smoothie, I never get sick like that.

  16. My 13 year old had a severe allergic reaction 30 minutes after consuming part of a Bolthouse Farms smoothie (his second time consuming, first time was day before and no reaction…sensitized by the 2nd dose, the doctor said). No time for a hospital. 8 teaspoons of Benadryl later the hives from his scalp to his feet, his purplish throat area, red trunk, arms and blistered legs, swollen head and eyes along with the chills and nausea receded. Marks still visible on him the next day… and after I came out of survival mode…reality became clear. I returned the dozen or so bottles to Publix and they suggested an incident report be completed. Publix was great and corporate service called us the very next morning. They stated Bolthouse would also be calling us. It has been 12 days, no word from Bolthouse. Two docs said do not trust any ingredient labels. We also learned of FDA loopholes. I just want a bean with a string in it again and to not raise a child in a world where an Epi-Pen is a standard item all families have to carry when they eat since they cannot avoid dangers due to legally hidden GMO, processed allergens. Or as in the words if my 13 year old, “oh you mean that evil mutant smoothie.”

    • WoW! Sorry to hear that. I’ve actually stopped drinking Bolthouse Farms. I stopped years ago. That’s unfortunate your son had such a terrible reaction to theiur product. I’m glad he’s okay, but I’m not surprised no one from the company has contacted you. Most of these large corporations don’t acknowledge when their products are harmful. That’s why the Consumer Product Safety Commission was created. I would say if you really have an issue with them and their products look into contacting either the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Department of Agriculture or the Food and Drug Administration. Just a thought.

    • Sorry to burst your bubble. But hey, honestly If you like it, drink it. These days everything has something beneficial and something that can possibly be harmful. If it makes you feel good and you enjoy it, go for it. But, as far as drinking 32 ounces a day, i’m not sure if i’d do that. Bolthouse farms beverages have a lot of sugar and quite a bit of sodium. A healthier alternative would be to start juicing yourself. Though it may be costly, it’s the only way you can actually see what’s going into your beverage. My wife and I juiced for a few months and we loved it. Just a thought.

It is natural sugars in the fruit already. I have e had an allergic reaction. As a rule of thumb some people will react differently. That does not mean the product is bad. I know that my blood normalizes and gets better and my chronic pain and swelling goes away when I drink Bolthouse Farms. I love it and my body works better when I drink it.

  18. I think it is crazy no one has mentioned the amount of sugar you consume from these drinks! In the 15.2 oz bottle of Protein Plus Chocolate shake (it has 2 servings in the bottle) but most people will chug that whole bottle in one sitting meaning you just consumes 60grams of sugar! There definitely is healthy stuff in these drinks and that is what this company runs off of (that and ignorance)… but even with these “healthy factors” you are well on your way to diabetes! One of these bottles has more sugar than a can of coke! Yes low fat… yes decent calorie (per serving) yes great protein source…. but very very very high in sugar and that is how they get it to taste so delicious…… and this is why they are so addictive. Natural foods like Broccoli, real natural food, are not addictive!

    Like

    • Read my comment above… I know it is too long, but plod through it and take a break if you need to, Write down the things that may apply to you.

Your tongue should not be having such a reaction to a truly healthy drink. You should call the manufacturer and let them know what happened and give them product info so they can track and collate your reaction to what other people may have experienced.

It sounds like an allergic reaction. Do you have a contact skin allergies? Once you let the manufacturer know about your reaction you should also ask if there is anything in the product that is not specifically listed on the ingredients label. Insist on getting a specific answer… they will resist, but they know.

Sounds like you may have a yeast or yeast by-product allergy.

  21. “Natural” flavors are not natural…. that’s the assumption we must make, and we will be right most of the time.

When you are trying to eat healthier products and a manufacturer is luring you in with health claims or implications AND won’t discuss their ingredients, you simply avoid their products… and make sure you let them know by calling and/or writing.

I called Bolthouse Farms and was told that some of their juices contain yeast products or by- products. But their first response to me was “natural flavors are proprietary recipes and we don’t have to tell the consumer what is in the flavorings”.

Not until I raised allergy concerns did they admit some products contain yeast. But they won’t post which ones have yeast in them on their websites and wouldn’t give me a list in an email or over the phone. They asked me what specific juices I was concerned about and then they would tell me whether or not that specific product had yeast or yeast by-products.

The FDA had to modify it’s permissions & “violate” company secrecy when people were injured or killed by allergic reactions to “Natural” flavors. But the limit of what they are requiring corporations to do is to respond to specific requests for information about specific allergy causing indredients, rather than labeling them.

Nearly all companies won’t tell us what is really in “natural” flavors. The FDA allowed this because the big food companies wanted secrecy. What are they hiding? Is it really just a recipe of flavors found in nature? How are these flavors manufactured? How unsafe are they? What are they contaminated with?

FDA & corporations are hiding the fact that these flavors are manufactured in factories just like articial flavors, but with different techniques (Abbott Laboratories is one example of. They are manufactured in fermentation vats OR genetically altered bacteria & yeast. Corporate CEOs/executives want secrecy, especially the soda companies, because of the manufacturing processes and to hide the true “natural” source of the flavor.

My favorite example of what is being hidden is castoreum, which is used for vanilla flavor, sometimes in ice creams… it’s a secretion from a beaver’s anal glands… Sound appetizing?

NOTHING in ordinary name-brand sodas is “natural”, not even the water (which comes from a local municipal water supply and contains water from waste treatment plants). No lemon, lime, kola nut syrup – NOTHING in regular sodas (Pepsi, Coke, 7-UP, Sprite Dr Pepper etc etc) is truly as found in nature or processed from ordinary fruits or vegetables.

Genetically engineered yeast and bacteria (types of GMO, genetically modified organisms) are general types of organisms used to produce many different types of substances, from enzymes, to contraceptives and including “natural” flavors. To get the desired substance out of the GMO you have to crush them and filter out the substance you want. because flavoring molecules are so large the end product is ALWAYS contaminated and not safe to eat. Contaminants include cell wall endotoxins, DNA fragments, raised levels of certain enzymes/proteins and contaminants from the soup these organisms are grown in.

So for products from companies like Bolthouse, Campbell’s and all of the big brand soda companies… send them the message that they will react to… stop buying their products until they reveal what all of their ingredients are and where they come from…
TELL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS!!! Tell them all to call the companies and complain that they want to know what is being fed to their kids & grandkids.

In the case of sodas we have the most GMO contaminated food product we have ever consumed. Outside of the municipal water all big name-brand soda ingredients are derived from genetically engineered organisms, including the high fructose corn syrup (the most dangerous substance modern food has ever been contaminated with).

Voting with your dollars and asking your friends and family to help is what corporations really understand and react to. If they feel it in their own pocketbooks, or even think they will be financially affected in the future, they will react revealing what is in their foods or removing things people won’t eat. Without this pressure they will continue to feed us more novel unsafe untested unknown (CHEAP!!!) additives that we would never eat, if we knew what they were.

There are alternatives to every processed product that contains the known & unknown contaminants & hazards of “natural” flavors. HANSENS makes a number of sodas that I will drink. I didn’t drink name-brand sodas, except for an occasional “Throwback Pepsi”, if nothing else is available. Now Pepsi is off the list too. Even Throwback Pepsi isn’t really made like old Pepsi Cola… it has those we-must-assume-are-unsafe unknown natural flavors instead of kola nut syrup. Make the effort to find alternatives or simply stop buying the processed foods with unlisted/hidden ingredients.

The accumulation of these contaminants in the thousands of products with “natural” flavors is having health consequences for American children and adults.

I met a young man in a food market who helped me find Hansens soda. He told me that his doctor told him to stop drinking soda because it was causing his systemic health problems… the first I have heard of a doctor connecting soda to physiological problems. More is certainly going on today with millions of people probably affected, but few people making the connection to the soda they are drinking or soda in combination with other products containing “natural” flavors.

Get smart about these issues and hit those companies in the pocketbook by avoiding ANY food products with hidden secret ingredients. It is against the law, the Food and Drug Act, to hide any added substances in food, but the FDA is illegally allowing manufacturers to get around this by declaring flavorings or colorings proprietary business information… guarded “recipes”

This isn’t a failure of government, but a failure of people in the goverment to execute their duties and responsibilities to/in the public interest and the public health by accepting bribes from corporate executives and CEOs in the form of jobs.

CDC head Julie Geberding & FDA commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes are 2 of the most infamous shysters… Gerberding influencing the approval of many vaccines (including the useless Gardasil, most expensive vaccine ever created) and Hayes approving aspartame (after the science showed it causing tumors in the brains of rats). Gerberding became Merck’s Vaccine Division President in 2010, 1 year after resigning, at 5 times her CDC salary. Hayes went to work for aspartame’s PR firm, Burston Marstellar, with a 10 year contract at $1000 per day (with the stipulation he not work on anything related to aspartame).

Bolthouse Farms (acquired by Campbell’s Soups) is taking advantage of the lack of regulation to pretend their ingredients are healthy, wholesome and natural… but tampering with the definitions of words is not the proper way to regulate or do business with your customers… it is the way to allow corporations to get away with making some of us, who are more sensitive to these contaminants, ill or killing us, over the long term.

The info is out there… you have to look read and try to understand.

  22. Yall should look into what’s REALLY in it! If you call them inquiring about the natural flavors listed on their ingredient list for Green Goodness, they are unwilling to share that information. They could not even guarantee that they are plant based ingredients. And carrageenan which is in the ingredients of some flavours such as the chocolate one, is a known carcinogenic. As in, causes cancer. Also, bolthouse supports NOT labeling GMO products. Which are chemicals and poisons if you didn’t know. Always do your research on what’s REALLY involved in the things you eat and drink. Not what the company says. Shouldn’t you know what you feed your body?

    • Thanks for the information. But just so you know, this post was written two years ago and since then Campbell Soup Company has purchased Bolthouse Farms and I have curtailed my drinking of the greater majority of their products. I appreciate you informing me of the Carrageenan issue. I have looked into it. If you or anyone else is curious about alternatives that do not have Carrageenan in them, here is a website I found that lists some: http://www.cornucopia.org/shopping-guide-to-avoiding-organic-foods-with-carrageenan/ Also, if you call just about any food company inquiring about the “Natural Flavors” in their foods, I guarantee 95% of them will not tell you. So while Bolthouse could possibly be a contributor to the negative health issues in America, there are many other companies who are much worse. Just a thought.

  23. You can buy Bolthouse a lot cheaper at Stop & Shop. Same as at Whole Foods.

Bolthouse is being acquired by Campbell’s. This means that GMOs may be used in the future even if the package says no GMOs. Be alert to this issue in the future. I am writing to the Campbell’s CEO to let him know that I buy Bolthouse but will cease to do so if they sart using GMOs and will keep my letter for any future class action suit in if Campbell’s is accused of uyusing GMOs while the Bolthouse label says no GMOs. If others send similar letters, and keep copies, that could be devastating evidence that Campbell’s deliberately ignored warnings about this issue.

I call that particular flavor the ‘green snot’ variety because while admittedly delicious and hell even addicting, (you can find them almost at any grocery store), to consistency is something that takes a little getting used to and reminds me of its Korean (Japanese?) equivalent. But hell, it is delicious.

Personally, I lovelovelove and can down an entire 32oz bottle in one sitting of the Mocha Cappuccino.
